Illuminating Objects

This collaboration between the Science Museum and The Courtauld Gallery will shed light on rarely seen artworks from the Courtauld collection.

Works displayed through the Illuminating Objects programme are on view at the Science Museum while the Courtauld’s home at Somerset House undergoes major renovation.

This allows a series of precious objects to be shown in a new context, highlighting their scientific and technological histories.

Currently on display: A painted ivory marriage casket

This ivory veneered and painted box was made in the early 17th century. The marvellous range of materials and images that it features reflect new developments in global trade and knowledge sharing at the time.

You can find the casket on Level 2 of the Science Museum, between Mathematics: The Winton Gallery and Information Age.
